When There's No Tomorrow - The Start of a Journey Towards Publication

14 Apr 2013

Ever since I was eight years old I've had a dream. A dream that I could pick up a book, a book that people can't help but talk about, and it'll have my name as the author.
Insha'allah (if God wills), by June/July this year I won't be dreaming of this anymore. It will be reality. Even if it isn't a book people can't stop talking about yet, it will be a book with my name as the author. And that's a dream come true.
My soon to be debut novel When There's No Tomorrow tells the story that mirrors so many we hear in passing. The story of oppression, of injustice, of war, of suffering... of a person put through far too much. Here are two blurbs:

I dream of the Past...
I fear the Present...
I weep for the Future...

80 years ago the worst war in human history started. 10 years ago it ended. At least that's what the history books say. But everyone knows, history books lie. The war never ended. It's still going, there just isn't enough people alive to argue.
My name is Kalina. My father is chief of my people, the Forgotten. The rebel scum, you may know us as. Pirates and swindlers. But we're not. We're just people fighting together to make a stand against injustice.
But it's not that simple; freedom and justice. Who chooses what is and what isn't right? Who chooses who dies and who lives?
Someone once asked me, who are we to stop a war? I ask you, who are we not to

Kalina lives and breathes this war. Her father is the leader of her people, of those forgotten when the war was declared over. And it is that for what they are named. They are the Forgotten. They are the people making a stand against injustice. Making a stand for freedom.

In the comments please tell me which blurb attracts you more and why. A lot of you are my ideal age group for this book - mid to late teens through early twenties, so I need to know what will make you want to read this book.
Please be notified that I am currently talking with designers regarding book covers. Stay tuned, I will hopefully be posting covers for opinions within a few days.

Congratulations on being so close to the ultimate writing victory (publishing)!

Your book sounds very insightful and I can't wait to read it.. It has some theme-overlap with the novel I am writing (mine follows a family throughout a political/religious war, as opposed to your main character, who sounds like an ideal heroine!) and I'm very interested to see how your story pangs out.

As for the blurb, I would go with the first one, as I like the snippets of assumptions about the Forgotten, even though both sound great!

Thanks Ginger! Your book sounds great, I'd love to see it published so that I can read it. :)
You will pleased to know that I have chosen to use the first blurb as it is in 1st person. The book is written in 1st person so I think that it carries it through better.

Salaams Hadiyah! I like the first one better; it seems to reflect Kalina's voice better and also provide a better insight into her character.

But I still love this part:
"Someone once asked Kalina, who are we to stop a war? Her answer. Who are we not to?"
tawfeeq InshaAllah!
